The third winner of the Emma Mebane Magnificent Machine Award is Sarah Kennedy.
After high school, Sarah is headed to Eastern Michigan University to major in SAG, which stands for Simulation, Animation & Gaming, and she clearly used her animation skills on the original art that she submitted for the EMMMA scholarship in 2014. See the video that Sarah submitted here:
It is the first time that an animation has been entered for this award and, in the eyes of the Mebane family judges, this was differentiating. Rod Mebane shared, “I can’t guess at how much time Sarah must have put into her 1-minute animation, but the result was outstanding and clearly conveyed the sense of the song that the family selected this year.”
The year’s song selection by Bon Iver – “Re: Stacks” – is about the loss of love. Sarah’s animation reflects this with a touching separation of a man and a woman followed by their “dreamy” reunification. She notes, “The animation goes through his process of grief to find a new start – similar to the message Bon Iver portrays.”
In addition to animation, Sarah is active in sketching and painting and uses family travel as a source of new creative ideas. She is also an accomplished gymnast.
