Update from Elizabeth

May 23, 2014

Hello Mr. Mebane!

I hope you’ve had a wonderful year and are enjoying the start to your summer (I know I am!).

I wanted to send you an email to tell you a bit about my first year at school and how much the EMMMA award has helped to shape and improve my educational experience.

I’ve just completed my freshman year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I’ve decided to study Communications, Spanish, and Art with the hopes of going into advertising, strategic communication, or graphic design of some sort. I luckily had the opportunity to take a drawing class my first semester and a comic making course my second with the cartoonist Lynda Barry. I have attached some of the work I produced during these courses; there’s a mix of traditional art and some digital art (I also included a few photos I edited for my friends, and a goofy photo I edited to make my family laugh!) These courses were amazing, and I can’t wait to pursue Wisconsin’s art program further my sophomore year. I will be taking a Drawing II course next semester to fulfill pre-requisites, and after that, Professor Barry has invited me back for a second semester of advanced comic making!!

Beyond my academic studies, I’ve also been asked to produce several images for outside sources. This includes the viking helmet you see above for the Geneva Theater Boosters. Additionally, this week I will be working on a few images for the website of the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, an organization on campus working to combine business, research, and creative pursuits (!!!). With any luck, I can continue to hone my digital art with these amazing graphic opportunities.

The incredible scholarship your family gifted me with last year has helped more than I could ever imagine to enhance my first year at school and make the next few years bright and promising. I can’t even express to you how grateful I am for your generosity.

I hope 2014 treats you and your family well, and I wish you my very best.

God bless,

Elizabeth Koskiewicz
