Starshine Galaxy Foundation NFP is an Illinois not-for-profit corporation, and application is pending for recognition by the IRS as a §4942(j)(3) private operating foundation. We maintain operations in the City of Geneva, in the far-western suburbs of Chicago.
Our mission relates to children who have passed away, and our general purpose is two-fold: 1) to sustain the memories of deceased children in honorable ways, and 2) to provide assistance to families bereaved by the loss of children who have died.
Starshine Galaxy is a young family-driven foundation. The Mebane Family of Geneva organized the Foundation in 2013, two years after the loss of their daughter/sister, Emma, who was 19 at the time of her death in July 2011. Initially, Starshine Galaxy Foundation NFP provided a vehicle for the funding of an annual scholarship given in Emma’s name, referred to as the Emma Mebane Magnificent Machine Award (EMMMA). We are now committed more broadly to celebrate the lives of children who have died, to honor their memories, and to sustain the lives of these children by promoting stories by and about them.
This starshinegalaxy.org website is intended to provide a platform for sustaining the memories of children who have passed away. We believe in the importance of keeping these children alive in our thinking, and the Foundation is in place to help make that happen.
